The Supremacy of Jesus Christ
What does it means for Christ to be supreme?
The supremacy of Jesus Christ means that He holds the highest position of authority, honor, and power over all creation. This idea is central to Christian theology and is grounded in Scripture, particularly in passages like this one:
He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is His body.
He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So He is first in everything." Colossians 1:15-17 (NLT)
"Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through Him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through Him and for Him.
He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is His body.
Here are some key aspects of what it means for Christ to be supreme:
Lord Over Creation
Jesus Christ is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. Everything was made through Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16). He has authority over all nature, physical and spiritual realms.
Preeminence in Redemption
Christ’s supremacy extends to His role in salvation. Through His death and resurrection, He defeated sin and death, reconciling all things to God (Colossians 1:19-20). His sacrifice is perfect, sufficient and complete for all who believe.
First in Rank
In terms of position, Christ is described as the "firstborn" over all creation (Colossians 1:15), which signifies His status, not that He was created or born in human terms. He is the rightful heir and ruler of all things, including the Church.
Authority Over Powers
Jesus is supreme over every power and authority, both seen and unseen (Ephesians 1:21). His name is over and above every name, meaning no human ruler, angel, or demon has greater authority than Christ.
Head of the Church
As the head of the church, Jesus Christ guides, governs, and sustains His body of believers. His supremacy ensures that the Church's purpose is aligned with God’s divine plan.
Worship and Adoration
Because Christ is supreme, He is worthy of all praise, glory, and honor. In Christian worship, His lordship is celebrated and acknowledged as central to faith.
Jesus Christ’s supremacy isn't just about position— it’s about His ongoing, active rule in the world and in the lives of believers, leading them into a life of relationship, transformation, deeper worship of God, and life-sustaining hope.
Worship God
"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
"The angel carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall ... the angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia (1,400 miles or about 2,200 kilometers) in length, and as wide and high as it is long.
The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass."
Revelation 21:1-4, 9-18
"I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations."
"I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets ...Worship God !”
